All the joys of funny sun time... of sunny fun time?

Erm... whatever.

I'm having a visitor over this weekend (and the next one too, although next week it's a different person) so I'm not able to do too much concerning my writing.
YET I managed to finish the story I want to use for the upcoming writing contest held by Blizzard Entertainment, and all that's left to do would be a little bit of final editing before I can actually already hand it in.

On a different, also good note - a few days ago I received first information (and the necessary clearance) on a hand full of texts for an upcoming schoolbook. Yay for side-projects. Wooh.
You can expect a few of those on this site too in the future, to give you a more in depth idea of my work.

And there she is again.
Another one of the short-short-update-madness'es this time.
Sorry for extra short-short today, but yeah - I'm kinda busy this week.

There you go, as always thank's for reading and having a gander at my site,
Marc, the sometimes strangely idolized

The off-limits of a text

Well... I have to admit, the header sounds a bit rant-y-er than I wanted for it to be, but meh... It's just a play on words... which probably doesn't make that much sense but yeah.

And still the text I wanted to talk about is somewhat off-limits, because it's for another writing contest - and as my often so underestimated common sense tells me - I shouldn't be posting too much of something like this on the interwebz beforehand.
And still I just can't hold it back completely... argh...
There you go ... as long as I still have the right to do so (frikken contest rules)... a short extract of the short I've been working on during the past few days...
(It might not be for those faint of heart)

***

Edited as of September 20th: Nothing to be seen here anymore unfortunately - text entered the competition, therefore the excerpt had to be removed for the time being.

***

It's not done yet, but it's growing quite nicely. So it should only take a few more days before I'm finished.

Now after having distracted you once again let us move on to something different. I slightly updated the page for Loner's Peak, offering links to published posts containing background on the story as well as straightening out a few other minor things that weren't up to date.

Can you believe it? That's already all for today... let's call it another short-update-madness...
As always, thanks for reading
Marc Wolfington

P.S.: No P.S. today.

The Jameston Bunch

"Here's the story, of a..."

Oh no! Oh my god no!...
Actually it's kind of funny how I can't concentrate on writing stuff when that tune is playing in the background... yeah I've got THAT song running right now.

Let me just turn it off again ...

So... What I actually wanted to say was something about the Jameston family. I said a few days earlier that I wanted to post a few things about Richard Jameston, his father and grandfather... and here ya go.

Benjamin Jameston

The man, the myth, the legend...
Little is still known about Richard's grandfather, except that it was him who founded the Jameston Company in order to capitalize on the wars the US got involved with.
He was also the one who initially started investing large amounts of money into scientific research in order to develope new technologies with the goal to enhance and improve life on earth and mankind itself. Under his management JSD got involved with research on hive-minds such as the one of bees.
It is rumored that Benjamind Jameston died during the early 1950's, but this has never been verified by the family.
(See here for all the parts of the Company and their abbreviations)

Henry & Margaret Jameston

Probably the most powerful couple of the US...
Henry's and Margaret's marriage had been arranged when she was only 4 years old. This union proved to be a troublesome one many many times, nevertheless they developed a strange kind of affection for each other over the years.

Henry is the only son to Benjamin Jameston and thus the heir of the Jameston Company. He was born in 1931 and died at the age of 35 in 1966 due to a complication with an experiment conducted on himself.
He took over a leading role within the company shortly after World War II, once his father thought of him as 'ready'. It was due to Henry's influence that the Company started to push away more and more from solely military tech and instead used it as a foundation for new things:
Security (filter technology) as well as genetics (JG) and "bionics" (JB) as Henry used to call it.
Genetic as well as bio-mechanical engineering soon became an obsession of his, which finally lead towards his demise.
His views of mankind quickly deteriorated once he was sole owner of the Jameston Company. He started to view mankind as flawed and wanted to 'enhance' human beings with his technology so these 'flaws' would disappear from the face of the planet.
Due to his own effort of becoming the first 'enhanced human being' he decided to replace his own weak heart with a mechanical one. Unfortunately his own technology wasn't ready yet...

Henry left behind a son - Richard - as well as his wife Margaret. After Henry's death Richard was supposed to take the seat of CEO in the company, yet he was only 2 years old at that time. A 'replacement' was installed until Richard would be old enough to take his turn on leading the family venture. It was Margaret who looked after Calvin Hobbes who had taken on said position for the time being, so he would run the Company in favour of Henry's will.
It is widely rumored that she was the one who founded JVC originally in 1963.

The whereabouts of Margaret Jameston are currently unknown and kept away from the public.

Richard Jameston

The Lion of LA
Richard Jameston was born in 1964 and is currently 38 years old. He is also the current head of the Jameston Family.
He took the seat as CEO of the company at the age of 25 after a long and thorough education by his mother and various elitist schools. Aside to his studies he already worked in the company since the age of 18 before he took the leading position. During this time he also introduced a new logo - a lion's head - for the brand "Jameston", thus earning him his later nickname together with his fierce and keen way of managing the enterprise.
In contrast to his father and grandfather he is more a businessman than a scientist or military activist, yet still he follows in the footsteps of the legendary Henry Jameston as he invests high amounts of money from the company into JB and JG.

A black cat named Alecious is his prized possession.

There you have it - even more background.
I might tell you a few more things about Alecious in the future - but for now I'll leave it at that. (And believe me, he's quite a special little fella.)

As always thanks for reading,
Marc, the Hyped-Up

P.S.: I meant this song here... or rather all of them. Enjoy and kudos to the show... I think it's kinda funny whilst it actually isn't. Old television was the best, wasn't it?

Aftermathing it up

First off, before I get to the things I actually wanted to write about - as you can probably tell from the little box on the right side of this page, Sir Beni James Honeypaw of MacLeod now has his own little profile on Blogger.com and has already received all necessary clearance to be able to post his own stuff on this blog.
It highly depends whether one views this as an improvement or not... just, well, be nice to him... okay? ... At least a little bit. He has a hard enough time living with me...

Now... I had another look at my own blog post from last Sunday and I realized how little info on 'Loner's Peak' I had actually put up on this site so far. Sorry about all that.
So a lot of my ramblings might seem like strange and not very sensible (got my first negative rating on webook telling me exactly that not too long ago). But fear not! It all ties up quite nicely overall.
The prologue as such, as you can read it over yonder, gives quite a good idea of setting for the story, still most of the stuff is not addressed directly before chapter 2.

To give you the general idea and make it easier to understand the whole stuff about the Jameston Company from a few days ago - in a nutshell:
The plot of the story is set in 2003 A.D. - or 40 A.A. how the year is also know to a group of religious fanatics. Mankind is wasting away in the larger cities, hiding behind thick clouds of industrial smog which is solely produced as a frail and volatile means of survival.
The atmosphere of the Earth is contaminated by sulfuric acids ever since the 1960's. Nobody knows (or wants to know) what triggered this change of the planet or has any real explanation for this shifting towards a kind of Venus-like atmosphere.
The flora and fauna of the Earth has been reduced to almost nothingness, most kinds of animals and plants are already extinct, as nothing outside of large areas covered in smog is able to withstand the highly concentrated corrosive acid rain. And even for man the means of survival run thin.
The last lifestring they - we - are attached to is the technology provided by the large Ventilation Companies which are scattered across the Earth making profit from the planets suffering by offering the simple bargain: those able to pay survive. And one of said Ventilation Companies is the Jameston Ventilation Corp (short: JVC) which I tried to showcase a few days ago.

There you go - everything kept short - for more details stay tuned. I'm sure I'll give away a few more things now and then... next up on the to do list would be a look into the family history of the Jamestons in a few days or so.

That would be all for right now.
As always, thanks for reading.
Marc, the now-suddenly-shorter-haired

Headaches included free of additional charge...

The following text could be called an experiment.
I currently plan on using this as a prologue to one of my upcoming stories. Still it's just a rough idea at this point in time.
Admittedly it's not exactly an easy read, but yeah... gotta try going somewhat different (difficult) ways, right?
(I know, I know... I'll prepare for my stoning ... wouldn't want to be unprepared for that, wouldn't we?)

Nightingale

Welcome to my funeral.

Ich sitze hier bei meiner Wacht,
Kalt grüßte mich die die dunkle Nacht.
Ich sitze hier in Einsamkeit
Keine Seele weit und breit.

Everybody’s only waiting for my confession.

Ich vergieße kein Träne,
Keine Heiße, keine Kalte.
So verkünd ich doch kein Geräusch.
So bin ich doch einer mit von euch.

It’s the sudden end of my honesty.

Jeder schlaue Mann schon schläft,
jede fromme Frau schon ruht.
Und doch gibt es der Streuner viele,
Als es manchem Herz gefiehle.

Innocence abruptly torn apart and tainted with blood.

Die Einsamkeit lässt Trauer schlagen
Viele Stimmen klagen, klagen.
Und will ich doch so weg von euch,
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

Left alone by the one you used to love.

Die Schatten wallen weiterhin
Bewegen sich von Haus zu Haus
Löschen alle Lichter aus.
Die Dunkelheit zieht ein.

Even my family’s turning their backs...

Mein Herz ist warm und doch so kalt,
Meine Seele schwitzt und friert.
Sollen sie doch Ruhe geben,
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

No more money.

Der Morgen naht, der Schatten schwindet
Die Sonne gar sehr gräßlich findet
Bringt doch Licht mit ins Haus
Und treibt die Schatten alle aus.

Not even a place to stay for the night.

Nein die Sonne war es nicht
Die Licht in diesen Schatten bricht
Nur meine einsam Laterne funkelt wie ein Sterne,
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

Everything is dark and cold when you’re alone.

Groß und Klein, Dick und Dürr,
Auch gar manch wohlgeformt Gestalt
Streifen durch die Dunkelheit,
Im Kampf mit einem Sinn.

Above all I’m charged with murder.

Wirke gar verloren sein
Blick ich in mein Herz hinein
Und erblicke dort dein Bild,
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

Life as it was used to be is corroding away before my eyes.

Der Sehnsucht langer Atemzug
Vergeblich neue Opfer sucht
Der Hunger dieser Einsamkeit
Wurd jüngst erst erneut befreit.

And still my thoughts are with you.

Und kämpf ich doch dagegen an
So bin ich doch sein Untertan
Das gefühl ist doch zu stark für mich,
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

I didn’t mean to get dragged into this.

Die Sehnsucht frisst die Seele auf,
Saugt dir deine Wärme aus
Macht dich zum Schatten gar
Glück im Kampfe rar.

Downhill is always a steep and slippery road to travel.

Seh ich doch die Hoffnung schwinden
Wie sich alle Schatten winden.
Kämpfe nochmal dagegen an.
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

Please! Help me!

Die Willen brechen
Die Herzen sprechen
Die Schatten schaudern
Die Geister plaudern

But you won’t.

Nun vergieße ich die Tränen doch
Ohne Reue immerfort.
Möge doch das Licht zergehn!
So bin ich doch ein Teil von euch.

Not after what had happened.

Die Nacht ist düster weiterhin,
Die Winde ihre Lieder sing’n.
Der Verzweiflung letzte Stuf,'
Wie sie diese Schatten schuf.

Though even the police thinks I’m not capable of such a thing.

Der Hoffnung gibt es keine.
Der Lösung jedoch eine.
So hab ich doch dein Bild erseh'n.
So bin ich doch Kein Teil von euch.

Yet what nobody knows...

I did kill her...

Messing around with two different languages is kind of fun... at least when you know both...
(I'll break with my actual plans and offer a rough translation for the poem at some point.)

Aug 14, 2011

Oh don't mind me...

... just pushing my bed around.

Yeah, pushing a bed and various other pieces of furniture around, emptying and refilling shelves and as well as a few stray drawers (though not that many all in all) and finally getting all my stuff out of my bags and back into the built-in closet of my apartment. Together with cleaning up everything, that was quite a day till now.

Redecorating is kind of fun admittedly, though the whole 'pushing the bed around'-part not so much. (and it was a bit too heavy to lift it alone.. while Beni wouldn't help at all... just as usual; always only concerned about honey)
And it's increadible how different things can look after just a few changes.

So yeah - except for that I was able to "retrieve" my mail from the last month today and I can finally feel at home again.

But enough of me babbling about such things... on the trip back to Bremen I had a lot of time to flesh out the notes I made for 'Loner's Peak' some more.
Also - I still intend to post the timeline I came up as a background for the story... just not today... I'd still like to get a bit more of the actual story done, before posting about the background of it all.

Yet what I probably could offer... is a bit more insight into the 'Jameston Company' or JVC - the 'Jameston Ventilation Corp' as it is called at the current time of the story. (40 A.A. / 2003 A.D.)

*~*

JVC is a top-notch company for ventilation systems in the US and the leading power in modern LA, securing survival for the west coast (for everybody who can afford their next to flawless vent-systems) as well as secretly pushing even further into different areas of science with their technology.

The Jameston Company was originally founded 1921 by Benjamin Jameston as a military company by the name of 'Jameston Military' (JM), originally only producing weapons and ammunition for the US troupes. Shortly after the creation of JM, Benjamin Jameston decided to devote some of the corp's resources to science itself and formed an extra department by the name of the 'Jameston Science Department' (JSD) in 1924. (This would become the rise and the downfall of Benjamin's only son Henry, who joined the family business as soon as he was old enough in the eyes of his father - around 1947/48).

The JSD soon developed own departments - e.g. Jameston Bionics (JB) in 1949 with the goal to create mechanized body parts to improve living beings. This was solely due to the obsession of Henry Jameston and his craze to be able to create flawless human beings. Yet the first major breakthrough was not until 1985 in a coop with Jameston Genetics (JG - founded 1955 with similar goals to JB), when these two departments created the first living being out of nothing which was also able to survive in the sulphuric atmosphere that had taken hold of the earth since the 1960's.
Additionally this was somewhat ground-breaking as most parts of the Earths biota were supposed to be extinct at that time.
(Henry Jameston died 1966 as he conducted an experiment on himself - he longed to become the first "enhanced" human being - unfortunately the mechanical heart he wanted to have implanted did not live up to his expectations. Henry died 1 1/2 years after his son Richard had been born.)

Due to the events during the Cold War and the sudden rise of corrosive chemicals in the atmosphere the Jameston Company decided to devote parts of its military technology (various types of air filters for defensive means) to the public and create the Jameston Ventilation Corp. (JVC) in 1963.
JVC grew quickly as their ventilation systems soon became mandatory for survival. As the vent corps became more and more important and the more useless weapons became (they simply eroded away) JM decided to redirect most of its technology - therefore Jameston Ventilation Corp Security  (JVCS) was created in 1965.

Currently the Jameston Company, mainly JVC is lead by Henry's only son Richard Jameston, who acquired the nickname "Lion of LA" early on in his career. He took the seat of his father in 1989 after being thoroughly educated.

There you go... I admit it might be quite a lot and sound a tad confusing at first but'll clear up. (at least I'd expect something on the lines of that - it's not that easy to turn my notes into a small text like that... at least not for me... Then again those up there are only scrapes of the things that I have here next to me. I'm just bad at making it short...)

I might go a bit into detail on the actual Jameston family later this week.

And it's all just the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks as always for reading, I hope you enjoyed the short peek at the Jameston Company.
Marc, Bringer of Sulphuric Fury.

P.S.: New Kitteh coming up... this time an actual cat
P.P.S.: I just love this song text...

Back and already away again

Sheesh... what a trip...

So... to get the whole blog-part out of the way - first a few nice and good (personal) news for a start-up:

I'm back from the Wacken Open Air 2011 and it was a blast, just as we all had hoped for (although the planing ahead of it was kinda screwed up). Everybody had a great time, you got to know a whole lot of new people, listened to good live music and *cough* got a little bit drunk *cough* ... so yeah .. the usual

Now the not so good parts amongst the recent events:

My cat decided to ALMOST starve herself to death at home in Saxony - so I'm not quite in Bremen at the moment, and just a little bit further south (460 km ~ 286 miles).
Which also means that yesterday was kinda rushed all the way... we packed our stuff and tents, got to Itzehoe (20 km ~ 12,5 miles) to catch our train from there to Bremen (160 km ~ 100 miles).
We started rather early, got out and on our way just before the first bigger wave of people leaving that morning and reached Bremen round about 11:15 am. All of us were really tired (last night has been really short, not only due to heavy rainfalls drumming against the outside of the tent) YET shortly after getting home I received the call from (my 2nd) home informing me about the current (dire) situation... a descicion had to be made quickly and off we were towards Saxony.
A booming 4 hours later we reached my old home and were welcomed by a walking skeleton which used to be my cat... She looked terrible, the poor thing (and I felt terrible seeing her in such a state...) My grand-ma told us the whole story how she started to eat less and less up till the end when it was barely anything, and how she called the vet in for additional help
BUT ...
the good news in the end... as soon as me and my mom/mum/ma (whatever you would fancy calling my mother) came home to her she started purring again, happily miew-ing about the house and - best of all - eating again... still not too much (not like before we started our trip) but that's something that has to get back to normal slowly bit by bit.
And right now, she's sleeping next to me, sometimes raising her head over to me with a happy (and astonishingly healthy) purr along to it.

So... now that that's out of the way ... back to business... or something like that...
I'll be heading back to Bremen during the course of the week, where I will take up my virtual pen once again.
If everything goes well (which hardly ever happens) I should be able to make quite a bit of progress on 'Loner's Peak' till the end of August, which would allow me to start fooling around with more stuff for the following parts that currently go by the working titles 'Fool's Flight' and 'Savior's Haven' ,as well as some other stuff that I currently call 'Nightingale' and 'The Bamboo Labyrith' (not that one in Alnwick Garden btw).

So... I'd better stop for now, there's my cat coming over to me, probably aiming for my lap, looking for a bit more attention from me. Judging from her body... you could probably call her Victoria Beckham at the moment...

There you go - as always thanks for reading,
Marc, keeper of the cat

P.S.: New Kitteh uploaded
P.P.S.: Real Kitty just got up again and is happily eating away on her food. =^.^=

Aug 3, 2011

Oh, he's still alive...

Yeah, I am, although it's Wednesday morning, 8:17 am to be precise (I almost called it Monday morning but well... my sense of time is totally screwed up right now...) and I'm back from holiday.

That would be great, but yeah ... I'm off again in about an hour. Yet I promise this time won't take me as long to come back ... Wacken Open Air's calling for me... harhar. Should be a busy few days up ahead, but it won't take longer than Monday.

On a different note: the last month was quite productive. I filled about half a notebook with ideas, outlining etc for Loner's Peak and the two more parts of it's storyline following up, as well as parts of a second notebook for a new standalone story.
If you ask me, it's been quite a productive holiday, I should get on with writing as soon as I'm back in Bremen.
But for now, I'm off again - got to catch my train.

And a fun little quote from Loner's Peak for you while I'm on my way:

"Did I ever tell you the story of the little swallow searching for its place in life? [..]
No?[..]
IT DIDN'T FUCKING CARE! The End."

As always thanks for reading,
Marc, the kidnapper of sand

P.S.: New Kitteh incoming!
